How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost? The three kinds, what each one charges, and what the ads leave out

A button chatbot, an AI chatbot and a custom build don’t cost the same or charge the same way. What a business serving 100, 400 or 1,000 people pays each month, the fees that show up after the demo, and how to compare two quotes.

“Plans from $197 a month”, “starting at $49”, “request a quote”. If you are trying to find out what a WhatsApp chatbot costs, you run into prices you can’t compare, because they aren’t describing the same thing. Behind the word “chatbot” there are three different products, and behind the price in the ad there are at least two more charges. This guide puts them side by side, with the math in dollars.

The three kinds of chatbot, and how each one charges

KindWhat it doesHow it charges
Button botA menu: “1 for prices, 2 for hours”. It answers what is on the menu.A low monthly fee per number or per contact; you build it.
AI chatbotUnderstands what people write in their own words and answers with your business’s information.Per conversation or per person served, because every message goes through a language model.
Custom buildAn agency or a developer programs it for your business. An upfront development fee, plus maintenance and hosting every month.

For reference, a self-serve platform that publishes its prices charged between US$49 and US$199 a month in October 2026, depending on whether you handle 50 or 1,000 conversations.

The three charges you pay every month

  1. The provider. What the ad says: the platform, the dashboard, the support.
  2. Meta. Every message the business delivers through the WhatsApp Business Platform. For US and Canadian numbers, since October 1, 2026, US$0.0034 per service or utility message and US$0.025 per marketing message, billed straight to your account. The details, including when messages are free, are in the WhatsApp Business API pricing guide.
  3. The AI, if it has one. Some providers include it in the plan; others charge for it separately, in “credits” or per message. Ask which, because credits run out mid-week.

What you would pay per month: three examples

Say the chatbot sends about 5 messages per person served, all within 24 hours. Meta’s part looks like this:

People per monthMeta messagesWhat Meta charges
100500about US$1.7
4002,000about US$6.8
1,0005,000about US$17

Meta is the small part in the US; the provider and the AI are what you are really paying for. With FILTRA, the Essential plan costs US$159 a month and includes 400 people served with AI; the Team plan costs US$269 with 1,000. If your chatbot writes first with promotions, those messages cost about seven times more than replies.

What the ads leave out

  • Setup. Connecting the number, loading your information and testing it takes hours. On self-serve you put them in; with a provider, ask whether it is billed separately.
  • Meta’s messages. If the provider bills them, ask whether there is a markup.
  • The cap. “Up to 500 conversations” sounds like plenty until a good week. Ask what happens when you go over: it stops, it costs extra, or nothing happens.
  • Your number. If they ask for a new one, your customers will keep writing to the old one.
  • What not answering costs you. It is the number no quote includes. If ten people write at 11 p.m. and you answer at 9 a.m., how many already went elsewhere? The after-hours guide tells what happened in a real case.

How to compare two quotes

Ask each provider for these five figures and put them in the same table:

  1. The monthly price of the plan you actually need, not the smallest one.
  2. Setup, if it is charged.
  3. What Meta charges, and whether you pay it directly or through the provider.
  4. What happens when you go over the cap.
  5. Whether the AI is included or billed in credits.

Then divide the monthly total by the people you serve: cost per person is the only figure you can compare across a button bot, an AI chatbot and a custom build.

Questions that always come up

Is there a free WhatsApp chatbot?

The automatic messages in the WhatsApp Business app are free: greeting, away message and quick replies. But they always say the same thing and only work on one phone. A chatbot connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform is never entirely free, because Meta charges for messages the business delivers, even if the provider charges nothing.

How much does Meta charge per WhatsApp message?

It depends on the message type and the country code of the recipient. For US and Canadian numbers, since October 1, 2026, about a third of a cent per service or utility message and two and a half cents per marketing message. Meta bills the business directly, separate from the chatbot provider.

Does an AI chatbot cost more than a button chatbot?

Yes, because every message goes through a language model, which costs money per person served. In exchange, it answers what people actually ask in their own words instead of forcing them through a menu, and it doesn’t lose the person who couldn’t find their button.

How much does it cost to set up a WhatsApp chatbot?

It depends on who does the work. On self-serve platforms you set it up yourself: free in dollars, expensive in hours. Providers that hand it over working either charge a one-time fee or include it in an annual plan. Ask before the demo, because it usually comes up after.

Is it better to pay per seat or per person served?

For a chatbot that talks, per person served, because that is what actually costs money. A per-seat price looks cheap until a week brings three times the messages: the provider charges it later, or the chatbot starts answering worse.

How FILTRA charges

Per person served, with published prices for each industry, setup done by us, and Meta’s messages billed straight to your account with no markup from us.
