WhatsApp Business API pricing: what you actually pay, and how to get access

What Meta charges per message in the US and Canada since October 2026, what the provider charges on top and what nobody mentions, and the two ways to connect your number. With a worked example in dollars.

The WhatsApp Business app is enough while one person answers from one phone. When you want an assistant to answer, several people to work the same number, or reminders to go out on their own, you need the API: the version of WhatsApp that lets software send and receive messages. Meta calls it the WhatsApp Business Platform. Here is what it costs in the US and Canada after the October 2026 change, how to get it, and what to know before you sign with a provider.

What it costs: the three charges

Behind every conversation on the API there are up to three separate charges, and ads that say “from $X a month” almost always show only one.

1. What Meta charges per message

Meta charges per delivered message, by message type and by the country code of the person receiving it, and bills the business’s own account by card. Since October 1, 2026 it charges for replies again (they had been free since November 2024), with the first 1,000 service messages each month free for every business number. These are the rates for US and Canadian numbers:

Message typeExampleRate, US and Canada
ServiceReplying to someone who wrote to you, within 24 hoursUS$0.0034 each, after the free 1,000 a month
Utility (template)Appointment reminder, order confirmation, “your case moved forward”US$0.0034 each
Marketing (template)Promotion, offer, “we have a new opening”US$0.025 each

The other free case: when someone writes to you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad on their phone and you answer within 24 hours, Meta opens a window of up to 7 days in which it charges for no message at all. And watch out for Meta’s own AI agent (Meta Business Agent): its messages are not service messages and are billed separately, at US$2.00 per million tokens, about 4 to 5 US cents per message according to Meta.

2. What the provider charges

The API alone has no screen: the provider supplies the inbox, the bot or the assistant. They charge in very different ways, and it pays to put them in the same unit before comparing: per user, per number of conversations, per contact, or a flat fee. Always ask whether Meta’s messages are included or billed on top, and if on top, with or without a markup.

3. What the AI costs, if an assistant answers

If artificial intelligence answers, someone pays for the model. Some providers include it and others sell it in credits that run out mid-month. Ask what happens the day they run out: if the assistant stops answering, the customer who writes that day never finds out why.

A worked example

A business with 300 people writing to it each month, all with US numbers:

  • About 5 replies to each: 1,500 service messages. The first 1,000 are free and the other 500 cost $1.70.
  • One appointment reminder per person, outside the 24-hour window: 300 utility messages, $1.02.
  • In total, about $2.72 a month to Meta. If Meta classifies the reminder template as marketing, that line alone becomes $7.50. Either way, the provider is what weighs on the bill, not Meta.

With FILTRA, the provider costs US$159 a month plus tax on the Essential plan, up to 400 people served, with the AI included and Meta’s messages at cost. All plans are on the page for your type of business.

How to get it: the two ways

Directly with Meta

  1. Create a business portfolio in Meta Business (formerly Business Manager).
  2. Create an app in Meta for Developers and add the WhatsApp product.
  3. Register the phone number and verify it by text message or call.
  4. Create a system user, give it permissions and generate a token that doesn’t expire.
  5. Set up the webhook: the address where Meta sends every incoming message.
  6. Add a payment card in WhatsApp Manager.

That is about forty minutes if nothing goes wrong, and at the end you have a connection, not a system: nothing answers until a developer builds what reads and replies to the messages.

Through a Meta tech provider

Meta-approved providers use Embedded Signup: from the provider’s dashboard you log in with Facebook and, in that same window, pick or create your business portfolio, create the WhatsApp account and verify the number. The provider gets permission to answer on your behalf and creates the templates. You add your card once in your WhatsApp Manager.

What you’ll be asked for, either way

  • A Meta business portfolio in your business’s name.
  • The phone number, with access to receive the verification text or call.
  • A display name that matches your business: Meta checks it against your portfolio and rejects generic ones.
  • A card for Meta to charge the messages to.
  • Business verification, with official documents, to raise the number of people you can message first each day. You don’t need it to start.

What to know before you sign

  • The number should live in your portfolio, not the provider’s. If it lives in theirs, the day you want to leave you lose the history and have to migrate the number. Ask for the WhatsApp account to be in your name.
  • Writing first takes an approved template. More than 24 hours after the customer’s last message, you can only write to them with a template Meta has reviewed.
  • If Meta moves a template to marketing, it costs about seven times more. A reminder with “don’t miss out!” can end up classified as a promotion. Check each template’s category in WhatsApp Manager.
  • Your number’s quality matters. If many people block or report your messages, Meta lowers the number’s quality rating and limits what you can send. Blasting promotions to people who didn’t ask for them is the fastest way to get there.

Questions that always come up

Is the WhatsApp Business API free?

Connecting costs nothing, but Meta charges for every message the business delivers. Since October 1, 2026 that includes replies again, with the first 1,000 service messages each month free for every business number. The other free case: when someone writes to you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad and you answer within 24 hours, Meta opens a window of up to 7 days in which no message is charged.

Can I keep the number I already use?

Yes. The number moves to the API and stays the same for your customers; what changes is where you answer from. While it is on the API it stops working in the app, except with providers that offer what Meta calls coexistence, which lets you keep using the WhatsApp Business app on the same number, with some limits.

Do I need a developer?

If you go directly with Meta, yes: the API only sends and receives messages, and the inbox, the bot or the assistant have to be built. With a provider, no: signup happens from their dashboard and whatever answers is already built.

How long until it works?

With a provider, connecting the number takes an afternoon if you have your Meta business portfolio and the phone at hand. Meta reviews the display name and the templates, usually within minutes or hours. What takes longest is loading your business information properly so the assistant answers with it.

Are the rates the same in every country?

No. Meta charges by the country code of the person receiving the message, not by where your business is. A US business messaging a customer with a Mexican number pays Mexico’s rate. Meta publishes the rate for every market in its rate card, linked below.

The API, already connected and answering

FILTRA is a Meta tech provider: it connects your number in your own business portfolio and puts an assistant to work answering with your business’s information. The home page shows how it works for staffing agencies, home service businesses and notary offices in Mexico.
